New Rapid Transit and the Original Miami Beach Streetcar
Miami Beach has been rejuvenated by historic preservation, yet the streetcar lines
that helped fuel its first real estate boom were long ago replaced by bus lines. Is it
time for historic preservation to come full circle?
The City of Miami has endorsed light rail as the preferred mode a rapid transit to
Miami Beach. If Miami Beach agrees, streetcars may once again follow their
historic routes from downtown along Alton Road and Washington Avenue.
While some details of routing may later be fine-tuned, the Miami Beach City
Manager has endorsed the concept of a South Beach loop – a circulator for local
trips, as well as trips to Watson Island or downtown – that adds a new and vital
dimension to the area's historic renovation.
