Meeting on Monday, October 8, 2007 @ 6:00pm

Please note that this meeting already starts at 6:00am - as always at The Seymour, 945 Pennsylvania Avenue, Miami Beach.
Guest Speaker Kimberly Horn, FDOT, will host a Power Point presentation on the latest alternatives out of the Alton Road PD&E, and answer questions from the public.
ART issued an open invitation to all commission and mayoral candidates—and to current elected officials as well—to attend this month’s meeting as ART asks:
Miami Beach is a barrier island with the highest density south of Manhattan, and for 5 years the Alliance for Reliable Transport has called for transit improvements such as streetcars, local circulators, and alternatives such as bike paths and car-share systems: Given that auto traffic on the Beach keeps increasing and parking is limited, if elected, what is your vision for the development of additional public transit systems?

See you on Monday.

Dade Boulevard Bike Path.
Join this community workshop to learn about the Atlantic Greenway Network (AGN) Master Plan and the Dade Boulevard Bike Path Project.
The AGN Master Plan is being developed to promote alternative transportation and community enhancement in the North, Middle and South Beach neighborhoods of Miami Beach. The objectives are to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, diminish gaps while improving network connectivity, and establish future bikeways.
The Dade Boulevard Bike Path project will run adjacent to Dade Boulevard from Bay Road to 23rd Street and will be designed to extend the existing Venetian Causeway bikeway to destination points within Miami Beach.

Guest Speaker: Michael Gongora, Miami Beach City Commissioner
Commissioner Gongora, elected to a vacated commission seat via special election last November, is seeking reelection. The commissioner, who appeared as a candidate during a forum at the Seymour that featured other commission hopefuls, was cognizant of the need for addressing existing vehicular issues while proposing viable rapid transit solutions. After a year in office, the commissioner will be laying out his accomplishments, and offering his views, for moving our community into a more modern urban environment through enlightened transportation strategies.

Commissioner Gongora’s website lists public transit as a top priority: “Parking and transportation continue to be a big concern of mine and one that I am also monitoring and working on diligently. Ultimately the solution to both of these problems is better public transportation that will cause a decreased need for parking and allow for transportation to flow through our streets.” ART agrees. The commissioner will be addressing ways of implementing this process, and answering questions. This is an opportunity to involve yourself in the transportation future of Miami Beach.

Guest Speaker: Fernando Vazquez, PE City Engineer, Public Works Department, City of Miami Beach

Our next meeting is on Monday May 7, 2007 6:30 – 8:00pm at The Seymour, 945 Pennsylvania Avenue, Miami Beach.

Guest Speaker: Fernando Vazquez, PE City Engineer, Public Works Department, City of Miami Beach
As the Miami Beach City Engineer, Fernando Vazquez is responsible for planning and overseeing above and below ground projects. More germane to ART, he also supervises the Transportation Division of Public Works. Among his duties are overseeing the design and implementation of community enhancements like the 16th Street ROW improvements project between Bay Road and Washington Avenue; the city’s bicycle master plan; and traffic-calming measures. Mr Vazquez currently facilitates the Coastal Communities Master Transportation Plan Steering Committee, which, among other things, is examining ways of streamlining future bus service along Collins Avenue, and recommending existing bus service improvements for the South Beach Local and A routes. ART looks forward to insightful updates into community initiatives designed to improve our increasingly urban environment through transit—and, for the opportunity of providing input on these important issues. A tall order, to be sure, but all in a day’s work for the redoubtable Mr Vazquez!
